Embracing the Full Spectrum: Emotions, Chakras, Koshas, and Your New-Year Kundalini Journey

“Emotions are not weaknesses—they are guides.”

In a world that constantly tells us to “be happy,” it’s easy to forget that emotions are not meant to be selective or convenient. Western culture often equates success, material possessions, and outward appearances with well-being. But life is not a perpetual high, and our emotions—joy, sadness, anger, fear, and everything in between—are not obstacles to overcome. They are powerful messengers, guiding us toward understanding ourselves, our relationships, and our place in the world.

My Personal Journey with Emotions

I spent most of my life, up until age 34, suppressing my emotions—especially the difficult or painful ones. I told myself that the trauma I experienced in childhood, and later in adult relationships, would not define me, that it would not hold me back. I believed I was strong enough to endure without needing to feel, and without realizing it, my ego’s idea of being “strong” robbed me of truly experiencing my emotions.

For a long time, I thought feeling deeply was a weakness. But I’ve learned the opposite: when we ignore or push away our emotions, they don’t disappear—they manifest in other ways, subtly shaping our lives. Now, I use my emotions as a tool—a compass—to understand who I am, what’s happening within me, and how to navigate life authentically. This journey is ongoing, and I share it openly so my students know: feeling deeply is not weakness—it is power.

The Five Sheaths (Koshas) and Kundalini

In yogic philosophy, we are said to exist across five layers, or “sheaths,” called koshas. Each represents a dimension of our being:

1. Annamaya Kosha – Physical Body: Tangible body maintained through yoga, nutrition, and movement.

2. Pranamaya Kosha – Energy Body (Next level down from physical sheath):

• The focus of Kundalini awakening

• Governs the flow of life force (prana) through chakras and nadis

• Clears emotional and mental blockages

• Bridges body, mind, and spirit

3. Manomaya Kosha – Mental Body: Thoughts and emotions; integrates naturally when energy flows

4. Vijnanamaya Kosha – Wisdom Body: Intuition and discernment; strengthened through meditation

5. Anandamaya Kosha – Bliss Body: Deep joy, peace, and spiritual connection; accessed as energy flows
