Most of life is lived in the middle — between starting and arriving, planting and blossoming, who we were and who we're becoming. Hindu mythology gives that long middle a hero: Satyakama, whose story comes from the ancient Chandogya Upanishad.
A boy with no idea who his father was asks to be taken on as a student. When questioned about his family, he simply tells the awkward truth — and it is his honesty, not his ancestry, that wins him a place. His teacher then hands him four hundred cows and a strange instruction: take them into the forest, and come back when they number a thousand. Years pass in the wild. And slowly, the world itself becomes his teacher —…
